Deborah Schwartz-Kates is Emeritus Chair of the Musicology Department at the University of Miami, where she served on the faculty for many years. Her body of research has focused on contemporary Argentine music and national identity. She authored the book, Alberto Ginastera: A Research and Information Guide, which is a comprehensive handbook on the composer and the first full-length study of Ginastera in English. Her research has appeared in the Musical Quarterly, the Music Library Association Journal Notes, the Journal for the Society of American Music, the Yearbook for Traditional Music, the Latin American Music Review, Americas, The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, and Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart. She has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Pro Helvetia National Arts Council of Switzerland, and the Paul Sacher Foundation in Basel, Switzerland. She served as Contributing Editor to the Handbook of Latin American Studies and was appointed a member of the Advisory Board for MGG-Online. Since retirement, she has assumed leadership roles in local organizations and championed humanitarian projects that address food insecurity, immigrant justice, and refugee resettlement.
