John Koegel is Professor of Musicology at California State University, Fullerton. He researches Mexican, U.S., and Latin American musical topics from the 18th century to the present, especially musical theater and music in the context of ethnicity and immigration. He is currently working on the extensive musical edition and critical study Mexican American Music from California and the U.S. Southwest, circa 1830-1930: The Lummis Wax Cylinder Collection and Other Sources (A-R Editions and the American Musicological Society), and the book Music and Theater in Mexican Los Angeles, 1830-1930. Koegel’s book Music in German Immigrant Theater: New York City, 1840-1940 (University of Rochester Press) was given the Irving Lowens Book Award by the Society for American Music. His articles and reviews appear in such publications as the Journal of the Royal Musical Association, Journal of the American Musicological Society, Journal of the Society for American Music, American Music, Revista de Musicología, Heterofonía, Historia Mexicana, California History, and others. Koegel’s research has been supported by fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, American Council of Learned Societies, American Philosophical Society, and other organizations.
