Listen to the San Antonio Vocal Arts Ensemble’s (SAVAE) intriguing, if not necessarily authentic, reconstruction of “Teponazcuicatl,” on their 2004 album, El Milagro de Guadalupe. In their reconstruction, SAVAE sets a text found in the Cantares Mexicanos with a newly composed melody that uses a pentatonic scale found on surviving huilacapitzli (clay flutes). The group interprets the Cantares’ percussion solfege to set the rhythms and uses the manuscript’s remarks on performance practice to help determine the overall formal structure.
